Very limited data on the SGM population in Ukraine is available and estimates of theSGM population vary. One study estimated the population of gay men, bisexual men, and men who have sex with men (MSM) to be 66,670, while another study estimated the MSM population alone to be 180,000 (Baral et al., 2018; UNAIDS, 2018). SGM research has primarily focused on HIV/AIDS and public opinion of the SGM population. In Ukraine, the SGM population faces discrimination, violence, and negative portrayal by the media, church groups, and politicians. Research has indicated significant barriers to implementing SGM health policies and indicated increasing stigma of SGM communities. However, activism and numbers of SGM NGOs have been growing in Ukraine. These organizations generate a majority of research on the SGM population in Ukraine.
