The only sexual and gender minority population estimate in Taiwan is from the Ministry of the Interior’s household registration system. “By June 2017, a total of 2,233 same-sex couples (i.e. 4,466 individuals) were registered, of which 1,755 were lesbian couples.”Although no comprehensive survey has been conducted to estimate the total size of the SGM population in Taiwan, a huge victory for LGBTQ+ visibility was achieved in May 2019 when the nation became the first in Asia to pass same-sex marriage legislation.
