The ultra-conservative policies of the Saudi Arabian government prevent SGM populations from accessing many basic rights. Same-sex activity can result in fines, whippings, and even capital punishment (Human Dignity Trust, 2020). Same-sex marriage, domestic partnerships, and civil unions are not recognized by the government, and sex-change operations and gender changes are illegal. In December 2019, a LGBTQ rights organization claimed to have received official state recognition—the first in the nation’s history (Al Bawaba, 2019).
