Although no complete estimate of the sexual and gender minority population has been conducted in Romania, the ACCEPT Association of Romania estimated that there are approximately 120,000 transgender Romanians. Romania’s social resistance to change norms around gender and sexuality has likely prevented SGM visibility. In 2018, a marriage referendum intended to redefine marriage in terms explicitly exclusive of non-heterosexual couples failed to pass, despite the nation’s strong, religiously conservative sentiments.
