When ILGA-Europe (International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association) ranked European countries in terms of their respect of human rights and equality, Malta topped the list (Samuelson, 2016). Malta is also the first and only European country to ban conversion therapy (ILGA World Report, 2019). It has accomplished this despite it being the number one European country with the most believers of God (as of 2010), consisting of 94% of its population (Deguara, 2018).This progressiveness would not have been accomplished without influence from the EU (Harwood, 2015).
