Kazakhstan is one of the more progressive Central Asian countries, but members of the LGBTQIA+ community report regular instances of discrimination (Fershtey, 2019). There is little information about sexual and gender minorities in Kazakhstan. This is likely due to the unaccepting culture of LGBTQIA+ communities in the country. There have been sodomy laws in the country for 63 years, and although those were abolished in 1997, its existence left lingering feelings of homophobia (Buelow, 2012).
