While exact numbers on the SGM population in Italy are not available, one study found that 4.8% of Italians identified as LGBTQ+ and that people between the ages of 14 and 29 were over twice as likely to categorize themselves as non-heterosexual compared to Europeans between 30 and 65 (https://daliaresearch.com/blog/counting-the-lgbt-population-6-of-europeans-identify-as-lgbt/). There is a decent amount of information documenting the fight for LGBTQ+ rights in Italy and their experiences but research into the healthcare of such populations is more sparse. Civil unions between same-sex couples in Italy have been recognized since 2016, but with marriage between them still illegal, Italy has a long way to go. Italy is one of the countries most lacking in protection of LGBTQ+citizens under the law in Western Europe. The largest LGBTQ+ non-profit organization, Arcigay, has been fighting for equality since 1985. They hope to achieve equal marriage and parenting rights for LGBTQ+ as well as passing legislation to protect LGBTQ+ people from discrimination (https://www.arcigay.it/en/chi-siamo/#VISION).
