Colombia is one of the more progressive countries in South America in terms of LGBTQIA+ rights. As is the case in many other Latin American countries, the prevalence of “machismo” culture (an importance of men demonstrating their “manliness”) and large Catholic influences on the country contribute to the discrimination and violence against Sexual and Gender minorities despite their legal rights. These factors likely contribute to the lack of information regarding the population of sexual and gender minorities in the country. However, it was recorded that 24,000 people in Colombia are transgender and 577,000 men have sex with men (UNAIDS 2018).
