Chilean courts have been known to be relatively nonprogressive in terms of granting equal rights to LGBTQIA+ people compared to the rest of South America. This is in part due to the conservative views of a large population of the country, as well as a dictatorship that existed in the country until 1990.However, due to a large amount of lobbying by citizens and LGBTQIA+ organizations, Congress has been pressured to offer this population more rights and protection.
