The government of Burundi is constantly prosecuting LGBT citizens who face severe discrimination. Same-sex unions are not recognized and same-sex marriage is constitutionally banned. This deep stigmatization has resulted in a severe lack of information on the SGM population in Burundi. The government actively opposes all SGM citizens and such policies can make it challenging to collect information. The homophobic environment may scare SGM individuals away from sharing information about their sexuality or fighting for their rights.
