On June 11, 2019, Botswana ushered in a new era –one in which consensual same-sex acts were no longer criminalized. Previously, according to the 2019 ILGA report, the law was such that consensual same-sex acts were punishable with a prison penalty of up to seven years. Given that climate, the fact that research on SGM populations in Botswana is scarce does not seem anomalous.
