Since the 1990s, Australia has continued to increase protection and grant equal rights for the LGBTQIA+ community, offsetting the previous restrictions in place from the rule of the British Empire. In a survey conducted regarding acceptance of homosexuality in secular and affluent countries, 79% of the 800 Australians surveyed said that society should accept it, marking it the 5th most accepting country of the 39 surveyed (PewResearchCenter). Despite the progressiveness of the country, Australian SGMs continue to face mental health challenges and discrimination.
