Limited data exist on the estimated size of the SGM population in Argentina. Estimates of the SGM population are fragmented and primarily relate to HIV/AIDS research: 5,400 transexual and 205,000 men who have sex with men (UNAIDS, 2018). SGM advocacy groups are extremely prominent and have made significant contributions to the passage of important laws. Argentina is the first country in Latin America to legalize same-sex marriage and has provided same-sex married couples with the same rights as heterosexual couples (PewResearch Center, 2019).Under this law, over 18,000 same-sex couples have been married (Human Rights Watch, 2019). Prior to this law, various jurisdictions in Argentina allowed gay and lesbian individuals to enter into civil unions (PewResearch Center, 2019). Starting in2012, Argentina passed extremely progressive laws that allow changes in gender identity without permission from doctors or judges, ban conversion therapy, and provide access to fertility treatment in national health services (Encarnación, Ungaretti, Gaseó et al., 2018) Despite significant steps towards the protection of SGM rights, discrimination against SGM communities still exists in Argentina (Etchexahar et al.,2016).
